Get to Know Dr. Thomas McConnel
Why Did You Decide to Become a Dentist?
Dr. McConnel has always been passionate about both art and science. At the University of Virginia, he majored in Biology and minored in Art history. Dentistry is a unique field that allows him to do both. He was initially drawn to the field of dentistry after years as a patient. There are few dental procedures that he hasn’t undergone himself. Dr. McConnel’s experiences have led him to a patient-centered philosophy of care – one in which patient preferences, needs, and values are taken into account to individualize treatment and help patients make informed decisions about their care.
Where Did You Study Dentistry?
Born and raised in Virginia, Dr. McConnel completed his DDS at Virginia Commonwealth University. After graduation, he dedicated a year to advanced training in general dentistry and implantology in Birmingham, Alabama. In order to provide the best possible care, Dr. McConnel strives to constantly improve upon his skills as a dentist, currently advancing his expertise through a variety of continuing education courses.
Outside of the Dental Office, What Do You Like to Do?
Dr. McConnel and his wife Brennan are excited to be back in Richmond after spending five years in Austin, Texas. When he is not busy practicing dentistry or working around the house, you can find him outside - hiking, paddling, or playing disc golf. Dr. McConnel loves music, whether he’s playing the piano or attending a show. He also loves visiting with his nephews and watching college basketball (Go Hoos!)
